Superman: Ultimate Flight is one of the first "flying" coasters in the world.   The second of three nearly identical coasters built by Bolliger & Mabillard for Six Flags Theme Parks, Great Adventure's version opened on April 17, 2003.

The ride was immediately very popular, and continued to draw long lines in the following seasons.

The ride was built in what was part of the parking lot, with the pavement being removed and grass and trees planted under and around it.   The rides entrance and gift shop-exit utilized a former warehouse which originally served as the park's administration building.
