The Haunted Castle was introduced in 1979.   This walk-through attraction utilized two mirror image mazes.   The mazes were built using a portable system housed in a series of trailers.  The maze was full of props and illusions, which were supplemented by live actors.

An elaborate facade was constructed complete with turrets and a drawbridge to cross a moat which served as the entry to the trailer mazes.

On May 11, 1984, the Haunted Castle was destroyed by fire.   In response to the tragedy, the park implemented a $5 million fire safety program the following season, which included the addition of sprinklers to all the parks buildings, and the construction of the water tower to supply the system, plus additional equipment and training in all areas of the park.
